Retractable Banner vs. Vinyl Banner: Which Is Best for Your Booth?

Holiday market season is here. Craft fairs, pop-up shops, church bazaars, brewery vendor nights, and then January trade shows right behind them. If you're setting up a booth, you've probably hit the same question everybody hits: retractable banner vs. vinyl banner, which one do I actually need?

We print both every week, and we've watched a lot of booths go up (and a few banners go flying). Here's the plain-spoken breakdown, so you can spend your money once and get it right.

The quick answer

  • Get a retractable banner if you're mostly indoors, you set up and tear down a lot, and you want a clean, pro look in about a minute. Ours is $155 with the stand and carrying case included.
  • Get a vinyl banner if you're outdoors, you need something big, or you want to hang it on a tent, fence, table or wall. Custom vinyl banners start at $15, and a 2x6 that fits the front of a 6-foot table is $48.
  • Doing a lot of events? Get both. A vinyl banner across the table and a retractable standing behind you is the classic booth combo, and it still costs less than most people expect.

What's the difference, exactly?

A retractable banner (also called a pull-up or roll-up banner) is a tall printed graphic that rolls down into a metal base, kind of like a window shade in reverse. You pull it up, hook it onto a support pole, and you're done. When the show's over, it rolls back into the base and goes in the carry bag. Most are tall and narrow, roughly door-sized, but exact dimensions vary, so check the product page or ask us.

A vinyl banner is a flexible sheet of heavy vinyl printed in full color. Ours are 15oz vinyl, hemmed around the edges and grommeted, so you can zip-tie or bungee them to just about anything. They come in a ton of sizes, from tiny 1x1 signs up to 10x20 monsters.

When a retractable banner wins

If your events happen indoors, a retractable banner is hard to beat. It stands up on its own, so you don't need a wall, a tent frame or a helpful neighbor with zip ties. It looks sharp and finished, and it puts your logo up at eye level where people walking the aisle can actually see it.

It's also the low-stress option. Setup takes about as long as it takes to read this paragraph, and the print stays protected inside the base between shows instead of getting folded, creased or stepped on in your trunk.

The one thing to watch: outdoors, a tall banner on a small base acts like a sail. On a breezy day at an outdoor market, it can tip over. If you do use one outside, keep it tucked inside your tent, close to the back wall, and out of the wind.

When a vinyl banner wins

Outdoor holiday markets, farmers markets, festivals and sidewalk sales are vinyl banner territory. Hemmed edges and grommets mean you can strap it to a 10x10 tent, a fence, a railing or the front of your table, and it'll shrug off sun and a little rain.

Vinyl also wins on size and flexibility. Need a big "NOW OPEN" across a storefront? A 3x10 is $129. Want a table-front banner? A 2x6 at $48 fits a standard 6-foot table nicely. Tiny budget? A 2x4 is $32. And if your booth layout changes from event to event, a vinyl banner bends to fit whatever you're working with.

Quick tip for breezy outdoor spots: a big solid banner catches a lot of wind. Pull it tight at every grommet, and if you're hanging something large in a windy area, ask us about wind slits.

Design tips that work on both

  • Logo and what you sell, up top. People read banners from across the room. The top third is prime real estate, and the bottom of a retractable often gets hidden behind your table.
  • Five to seven words, max. Your name, what you do, and maybe one hook ("Handmade Candles," "Custom Signs and Prints"). Save the details for your business cards.
  • Big, bold, high contrast. Dark text on light, or light on dark. Skip thin fonts and busy photo backgrounds behind text.
  • Send high-res art. Big prints show every pixel. Vector logos (AI, EPS, PDF, SVG) are best. If all you have is a fuzzy JPG, our graphic design team can rebuild it.

Skate side note: a booth banner works a lot like a deck graphic. You get about one second from across the room (or across the skatepark) to catch somebody's eye. Bold shapes and one clear idea win every time. More on that over on our custom skateboards page.

Don't forget the little stuff on the table

A banner gets people to walk over. The table is what gets them to remember you. A bowl of custom stickers (100 2x2 stickers are $39) disappears fast at any market, and 100 business cards are just $30. Running a booth outside a storefront? An A-frame sidewalk sign does a lot of heavy lifting too. And if you're also sending holiday mail to clients, check out our holiday card design tips.

Great prices, from a real local print shop

Here's the thing I'm proud of: our prices are good. A full retractable banner setup, with the stand and the carrying case, is $155. Vinyl banners work out to about $4 a square foot on most sizes, so a 2x6 is $48 and a 3x6 is $72. Add free shipping on print products and there's no surprise at checkout.

And you're not ordering from a giant faceless print factory. Super Sick Printing is a small, family-run shop in Gwinnett County, Georgia. I've been doing graphic design for about 15 years and printing for about 11, and I (or my family) look at your file before it goes to print. If your logo's too small, your text runs off the edge, or your art is low-res, we catch it and send you a proof first. Real people who care how your booth looks.

FAQ

Can you use a retractable banner outside?
You can, but carefully. They're built mainly for indoor use, and wind can tip them over. Outdoors, keep it inside your tent and out of the breeze, or go with a grommeted vinyl banner instead.

What size banner fits a 6-foot table?
A 2x6 vinyl banner fits the front of a standard 6-foot table well. If you want it to drape a little longer or need more height, a 3x6 works too.

How long do vinyl banners last outside?
It depends on sun, wind and how they're hung. Banners used for weekend events and stored rolled up between uses can last for years. Ones left up full-time in strong sun and wind will fade and wear faster.

How much does a retractable banner cost?
Ours is $155, and that includes the retractable stand and a carrying case, plus free shipping.

Can you design my banner for me?
Yep. Send us your logo, colors and what you want it to say through our contact page, and we'll put together a design and a proof for you to approve.
